Emphasis on the love. I have officially been in love with these two for oh, I don't even know how long. Their blog is one of the five or so that I actually read on a regular basis, because, duh, it's amazing. Young House Love is one of the best DIY blogs out there, and John & Sherry's design aesthetic is absolutely jaw-dropping. We frequent it all the time when trying to figure out our own DIY dilemmas, because they have fabulous step by step tutorials where you can read first hand how they tackled everything.
Recently, these two released a book, naturally called Young House Love, filled with all sorts of DIY goodies. As soon as it was released, I ordered it so I could get my paws on it, and last night, John and Sherry were at West Elm here in Minneapolis to do a signing. So I hopped in the car, drug Noel along, and waited in the cold for 4 hours to meet them. To be fair, it wasn't THAT cold, they were serving cookies and hot cocoa all night, and my friend Jenn met us there, which made the wait much more tolerable.
I've never actually waited to get something signed before, unless you count those silly books you get at Disneyworld when you're five, nor had I ever met anyone even remotely famous. Needless to say, I was excited. Not the "OHMYGOSHILOVEYOUSOMUCH" hysterics excited, because if you know me at all, you KNOW that is not me in the slightest, but I had the biggest grin on my face I couldn't wipe away.
So, what's the verdict of a two-year loyal reader meeting John & Sherry for the first time? They are just as kind and charismatic in person as they seem in their blog. Not only did they stay until the last person had a book signed (to put it in perspective, the event was supposed to go from 6-8, I got my book signed at 10:30, and there were still people behind us), but they acted as if each book they signed was the first they signed all night.

I'm obsessed with the owl themed goods West Elm is currently selling. You can get Jenn's owl mug here (currently on sale), or my adorable owl salt & pepper shakers.

When we were waiting in line, they gave us little sticky notes to write our name on so John and Sherry would know who to sign the book to. Well, as we were waiting I told Noel I was going to be so sad if they autographed it to "Kristen," because it seriously happens all the time (even when people see my name written in emails, Kirsten still somehow turns into Kristen or Kristin). When I walked up and handed Sherry my book however, not only did she spell it right, she even pronounced it right, which NEVER happens. So mad props Sherry!
All in all, meeting them was so much fun, and well worth the wait! John and Sherry, come back to Minnesota anytime!
I was there last night as well and had my book signed around 7:30. I wondered how late they stayed since the line was still way out the door when we left! They were so gracious!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed you got it signed at 7:30 - how early did you get there?!

ReplyDeleteWe were probably pretty close to each other in line - I was the third to last person in line, and it was around 10:30, 10:45 when my book was signed. Such a fun event.. although I never saw any hot chocolate except for the fake mugs of it around the store!
ReplyDeleteThey were passing it out earlier, probably around 6:30-7ish. It was such a blast though, wasn't it? I was so amazed at the turnout!
DeleteI love J-Boom and $herdog! I've been reading their blog for years, too, and I got the book ASAP. Sadly, I missed their event in Chicago because it was during my trip to NYC, but I'm glad to hear it was an awesome time!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about this post, especially you and Jenn! (and the owl trinkets!!) Super jealous I couldn't make it - I will be there next time with you + a thermos of hot chocolate!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from YHL. I wasn't able to make it to their book signing while they were here, but it sure looked like fun! It's so nice to see all of the other MN bloggers linked up too! Love your blog!
