client project: bathroom remodel

A few weeks ago I showed you all the living room redesign that I did for one of my clients.  In addition to redoing the living room, we also remodeled the mini bathroom in the basement which I'm going to show you all today.

The bathroom wasn't actually that bad to start with.  The maple vanity was in great condition, and I actually rather liked the vintage-style tile.  However, a lot of the tiles were coming up and were uneven, so we ended up just tearing them all up and replacing them.  I selected a larger tile because it helped the space feel a little bigger.

I wanted to bring some color into the space, but because it was so small, it was critical to use a light color that would help bounce light around the space.  The color used is Hirschfield 0490 Beacon Fog, which is similar to Benjamin Moore 1643 Santorini Blue.  I also replaced the old, dated mirror with a tall maple one that nearly filled the entire wall.  By putting a larger mirror in the space, I was able to make the room feel a lot bigger than it actually is.

The other side of the room was really empty, so to add some depth and dimension, we added floating shelves above the toilet.  This helped to break up the tall, narrow wall, and also provided a place to store toiletries and bring pops of color into the room.

You can get a much better glimpse of the tile we chose in this picture.

Overall, this was a very low budget project (the tile was only $1 per square foot), and aside from the tile, the only other purchases were the new mirror, the floating shelves, paint, new hardware, and a roman curtain that I made.  The total cost for all materials and accessories came in just under $200, which goes to show what a big difference minor updates can make.

Next up on my to-do list for this client is a major remodel of this bathroom.  Let's just say I'm excited to say goodbye to all of the green.

Have any of you made any small improvements in your home that made a big difference?  I'd love to hear about them!

  3. What a splendid transformation! The color blue works well with the space. Choosing the right and appropriate color is important because it sets the mood of the room. Anyway, my wife likes the old mirror, but we both agree that it didn’t complement with the fixtures and the bathroom itself. You have wonderful ideas and good luck on your new project. I know you’ll do great! ;-)

  4. I totally agree with Gilbert! The wall paint is just the perfect shade. Adding those panels above the toilet gave more character to a usual toilet room. I think I'll be using this color for my bathroom renovation soon. I hope my wife likes it too!
